The microstructure of a shell is way more protective then people know. A seashell is a closed 3-dimensional curved surface formed by two symmetrical open shells and we are bringing this structure to use. It's one of the first weeks where my coworker and I are in teams and we can go into research even more than before! We have discovered that it's the brick structure and not the material. Nacre is the inner layer of a shell and is composed with brittle aragonite pallets combined with not so strong proteins, while still letting the design of the shells to spread and only fracture in places where it would affect the organism inside when in connect with stress. Whereas the ribbing of the bivalve shell directs stress to the hinge and outer edges. The brick-like structure is kept together by proteins and is able to slide and move as to even stress away from the place of impact. Follow for weekly reports!
